UN Decade of Action on Road Safety
The UN Decade of Action on road safety began in May 2011. All countries are being encouraged to develop and implement road safety action plans to try to reduce road deaths as part of their contribution to the Global efforts to reduce road deaths by 50% by 2020. Many countries are struggling to know where to start in addressing this multi-sector, multi-agency problem. In order to assist them in identifying what they need to do to strengthen their organisations and systems to permit more effective road safety activity, the UN, through the UN Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC), has developed and published a UN Decade of Action Road Safety Action Plan built upon five pillars of activity. Countries are encouraged to develop country, province or even city or comunity-specific road safety action plans based on these five pillars so that road safety can be improved systematically.
